Overview

Reporting to the Vice President, Federal Government Relations, the Manager will work cooperatively with the CBA’s GR team in the development and implementation of federal government relations outreach strategies, to advance industry strategic priorities and objectives with the federal government. The Manager’s responsibilities will include:

Description of Responsibilities

  • Guided by the CBA’s strategic priority goals, awareness of member-driven interests as well as a continually refreshed understanding of opportunities and/or threats from the current political and public policy environment, the Manager will:
    • build positive collaborative relationships with key stakeholders including elected representatives and their staff, government officials, and industry groups;
    • manage the CBA’s relationship with key stakeholders, including certain ministerial offices, to advance specific CBA priorities;
  • Providing information and advice, responding to inquiries, and liaising with other CBA staff and member banks on issues of interest and concern to the industry or policymakers;
  • Participate in the planning and preparation for CBA engagement with legislative committees;
  • Collaborate and participate with the CBA Government Relations division in engaging CBA committees in relevant advocacy efforts on behalf of the industry;
  • Utilize the CBA contact management systems for tracking engagement with key stakeholders, including within member banks;
  • At the direction of, and in coordination with, the Vice President and others at the CBA, develop and manage special projects/events involving member banks and government representatives to showcase industry work, expertise, and views of public policy issues including Parliamentary Hill Days;
  • Work in partnership with the Communications division on:
    • the development of strategies and content for CBA communications materials for parliamentarians, political staff, and other key decision-makers;
    • the promotion of CBA programs, such as the financial literacy program, to engage parliamentarians and key decision-makers in the CBA’s community activities.
  • Working closely with the government relations team to:
    • report to CBA staff and member banks on political and policy developments;
    • ensure government relations activities are coordinated where needed or where policy files overlap;
    • ensure the CBA has effective, member-driven public policy development;
    • develop government relations strategies for constructive engagement with key government audiences to influence policy outcomes; and,
    • enhance communications with member banks as part of the Association’s cooperative and integrated Government Relations and Communications strategy.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of and experience with federal politics and policy development processes;
  • Strong interpersonal/communications skills including an ability to establish consensus and sustain relationships and rapport (the successful candidate works with member banks, elected representatives and government officials, representatives of other industry groups and the public on a regular basis);
  • Excellent writing skills (letters, briefs);
  • A post-secondary degree and/or a designation in a related program at a recognized institution;
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • Fluency in Canada's two official languages is an asset; and,Banking or financial institution experience and/or knowledge of financial regulation of banks.
