Taking a break from work this summer? A change of routine is a great idea, except when it comes to cybersecurity best practices! Here are five travel‑inspired tips to check off your to‑do list before you start packing:

Schedule a backup of your data

Back up the data on your devices to an external secure source before you leave. Especially on the phones, tablets or laptops that you plan to take with you on your trip. Also make sure you know how to restore your files from your backup device.

Check for software updates

Don’t delay on software updates and patches for your connected devices. Install updates as soon as they are available since the latest software could provide better security when you travel. Even better – automate the updates so they’re installed regularly.

Secure your devices

Make sure your devices are protected with a lock and, as always, ensure you have strong and unique passwords for each online account that accesses sensitive information.

Be wise about Wi‑Fi

Free Wi‑Fi is great, but make sure you confirm with the staff at the restaurant or hotel that you’re joining the correct network. Sometimes free connectivity can link you to scammers hoping to steal your personal information. And save your online banking until you’re back at home on a secure network.

Share photos of your trip, but later

Resist the temptation to share pool selfies on social media while you’re still on your trip. Cyber scam artists can take advantage of the fact that you’re on vacation to launch a targeted vacation scam against your friends and family, or your employees or workplace team members.

Safe travels!

Looking for love in all the wrong places

Romance scams are among the most common scams according to the Canadian Anti‑Fraud Centre, costing Canadians more than $50.3 million in losses in 2023.
